My First Tozo Experience
I remember the first time I tasted tozo, just like it was yesterday.
I was still a girl, my mum had just returned from the market with ingredients for lunch.
I was starving after a long day at school and needed something very delicious to eat.
Very eagerly I asked my mum, “mummy what’s for lunch?
Then she said, “Semo and Ogbono soup,” and my face dropped... She could tell I wasn’t thrilled.
Ogbono was my least favourite soup to eat, not even when I'm the most hungry.
But my mum smiled and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll like this one.”
Me? Like Ogbono? I had serious doubts. But I decided to trust her and wait.
A while later, food was ready... She called me to the dinning and asked me to sit.
I hesitated...
“Eat, you’ll like it” she urged, as she dipped a mould of semo into her bowl of soup and swallowed.
I followed suit, and what I felt was unforgettable. It was like a burst of flavours in my mouth.
My eyes widened with unbelief and my mom chuckled.
“See? I told you, you’d like it. She said.
With my mouth still full, I blurted out “This is different from the Ogbono you usually make mom, this tastes way better!’’
“It’s the tozo,” she replied amidst smiles.
But I didn’t understand what she meant by that.
Now, many years later, I’m all grown up with a family of my own to cook for...
